University of Helsinki has concentrated its basic and applied biological research and teaching to the Viikki Campus located some 10 kilometres north east from the city center. To foster research in molecular biosciences between research groups in different organizations (links below), a research group organization was established in 1996. It is organized to research programs with their own seminars and other activities.

The research programs of Viikki Research Group Organization form the basis of training in Viikki Graduate School in Molecular Biosciences (VGSB) and only the members of the Viikki Research Group Organization are eligible to apply for positions in VGSB.

Dissertations carried out in participating groups are published in Dissertationes bioscientiarum molecularium Universitatis Helsingiensis in Viikki.
