Folding and Secretion of Proteins in Yeast

We are studying translocation into the endoplasmic reticulum, and folding and secretion of glycoproteins using yeast as a model organism. We have discovered two novel chaperone functions, one unfolds prefolded proteins in the yeast cytosol for translocation into the endoplasmic reticulum, and the other repairs the conformation of heat-denatured proteins in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum. We are also studying selective parallel secretory routes, and part of our basic research data has been translated into patented technologies for heterologous protein production in yeasts.

The group's research activities has ended at the Institute since the Group Leader Professor Marja Makarow started as the Chief Executive of the European Science Foundation (ESF) on January 1, 2008.
