IntroductionMolecular
Biophysics of Biological Energy Transduction
The Molecular Biophysics Group is a part of the Helsinki Bioenergetics Group.
Research in the group is focused on understanding the processes fundamental to biological energy conversion - the molecular basis for the coupling mechanisms through which the energy of local electron transfer in the proteins turns into a electrochemical proton gradient across the membrane. The transmembrane electric potential generated in this way is used for formation of ATP and other energy-requiring cellular processes. Our main tool is real-time recording of a single catalytic enzyme turnover, with the aim to follow all of the molecular events that result in transmembrane ion translocation. |
