Instruments / Introduction

The laboratory has multiple platforms available for DNA sequencing, aiming to provide the best, most cutting-edge combination of sequencing approaches for the varying needs of our customers. Robotic tools are also applied extensively in eg. sample preparation and PCR purification.

The numerous instruments of our lab generally introduce 5 different sequencing platforms, 4 of which are next-generation sequencing:

Sanger sequencing / Fragment analysis by capillary electrophoresis:
The Applied Biosystems® (ABI) 3130 and 3730 sequencers of our lab represent these so called "first-generation sequencing" machines.

Next-generation sequencing:
There are four different next-generation sequencing platforms currently available in our lab:

  • Applied Biosystems® SOLiD™ sequencing by means of two separate sequencers
    (SOLiD 4 & SOLiD 5500XL)
  • 454 GS FLX+ pyrosequencing
  • Illumina HiScanSQ (to be replaced by MiSeq)
  • Single-molecule real-time (SMRT®) sequencing with the PacBio RS sequencer
