Rules of organization

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences, University of Helsinki, shall be to promote bioscientific research and research education on the Viikki Campus and support cooperation between research groups.

2. MEMBERS
The Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences shall accept as members those PIs working on the Viikki Campus who meet the following criteria:
- The group leaders must be principal investigator of University of Helsinki and belong to at least one research programme included in the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences.
- The members must have their own research topic and funding.
- Emeritus professors who used to belong to the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences may continue to serve as members.

The Board of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences shall accept group leaders as members upon the proposal of the presiding officers. Prospective members can apply for membership by completing an application form available on the website of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences. The secretary of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences shall present applications to the Board.

3. RESEARCH PROGRAMMES
The group leaders of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences may submit proposals to the general assembly on the establishment and closing down of research programmes. Each research programme shall organise, across administrative units, seminars and/or courses as well as other activities related to research and postgraduate education in the field of the programme. The research programs shall annually report their activity and to the board, give brief summary of the spending of the VRGO support and present plans for the following year.

4. ORGANISATIONAL BODIES AND OFFICIALS
The Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences shall consist of the general assembly and the Board. The Board shall include a chair, a deputy chair, the coordinators and deputy coordinators of research programmes as well as one representative of the Doctoral school in environmental, food and biological sciences and the Doctoral school in health sciences nominated by the doctoral schools to the board. The general meeting may also elect one research coordinator for a two year term.

The general assembly shall:
- Elect the chair and deputy chair of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences. The length of the term is two years
- Elect the coordinators and the deputy coordinators according the proposals of the research programmes
- Decide on the naming, alteration and closing down of research programmes
- Decide on the rules of organisation of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences
- Approve the policy for the use of collective resources
- Discuss and generate ideas for campus-level projects
- Submit proposals to campus units and the University's central administration
- Discuss matters raised by campus-based administrative units

Only the group leaders shall be entitled to vote in the general assembly of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences. The chair of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences shall convene the general assembly at least once a year. The general assembly shall be convened by email.

The Board shall:
- Accept new members
- Coordinate the research programmes
- Select the recipient(s) of a doctoral dissertation award based on criteria defined by the board
- Accept new members and make decisions on ending the memberships

The members entitled to vote shall be the chair, the deputy chair, the coordinators and the deputy coordinators of the research programmes as well as the leaders of the doctoral programmes and graduate schools operating under the auspices of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences.

The chair of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences shall:
- Chair the general assembly and the Board
- Prepare, together with the deputy chair, the matters to be discussed by the general assembly and the Board
- Implement decisions
- Approve invoices
- Accept thesis books to be printed in the series Dissertationes Biocentri Viikki Universitatis Helsingiensis

The deputy chair shall:
- Deputise for the chair

The research coordinator shall:
- Develope the communication between VRGO and faculties/institutes/central administration

The meetings of the research programmes:
The decisions of the research programmes shall be made by the group leaders in a meeting held at least once a year. The decisions of the research programmes shall be submitted to the secretary of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences.

The secretary of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences shall:
- Serve as the secretary of the general assembly and the Board meetings
- Maintain a register of group leaders, research programmes and presiding officials
- Be responsible for the financial administration, website and communications
- Perform other tasks assigned by the Board of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences

The coordinator and deputy coordinator of the research programmes:
- The coordinator and deputy coordinator shall be members of the Board of the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences.
- The coordinator shall convene and chair his or her research programme meetings. The deputy coordinator shall deputise for the coordinator.
