RESEARCH GROUPS AND PROJECTS

Research Program in Developmental Biology,Biocenter Oulu Research Institute, University of Oulu, Finland

Biocenter Oulu promotes research in modern biosciences, medicine and biotechnology. Research groups are selected after an open call for 4-years contracts with the institute by external international evaluation. The principle is to bring together the strongest research groups, and to build for them a dynamic research environment via recruitment of scientists and setting up a modern research infrastructure. At present Biocenter Oulu has 19 research groups of which 4 are working with developmental biology projects. Biocenter Oulu is internationally recognised for its research on extracellular matrix that plays a central role in regulating many developmental processes.

Biocenter Oulu research groups bring to the FinGerDevNet a unique expertise in extracellular matrix biology combined with the broad know-how and state-of-art facilities for generation and comprehensive analysis of genetically modified mice. Furthermore, the strong experience of professor Seppo Vainio’s laboratory in organ culture techniques is a continuation of a successful and traditional Finnish research line of kidney development.
